Ouirgane

A quiet Berber valley in the heart of Toubkal National Park, Ouirgane is known for its dam lake, olive groves, walnut orchards, and a Thursday souk that still runs on village time. Surrounded by mountain landscapes, it offers a peaceful, authentic escape from Marrakech.

Ouirgane sits about 62 km south of Marrakech, around 14 km past Asni on the road toward the Tizi n’Test Pass. The valley remains largely rural, with olive terraces, walnut orchards, and a small reservoir, while its elevation of around 1,000 m makes it cooler than Marrakech. Located within Toubkal National Park, it also pairs naturally with  Asni for a private excursion.

Why Visit Ouirgane?

Ouirgane turns the road south of Marrakech into a destination. Past Asni, the valley opens around the Oued Nfis, with red-earth hills, olive groves, orchards, and Berber hamlets beneath Mount Toubkal. A small dam lake adds a rare patch of blue to the dry High Atlas landscape.

Ouirgane also lies on the route to Tizi n’Test, one of the High Atlas’s great mountain passes, with the 12th-century Tin Mal Mosque along the way. For a more comfortable and guided experience, you can also consider a private Marrakech retreat tour.

Ouirgane vs. Asni: Two Stops on the Same Road

Both villages sit on the same mountain road south of Marrakech, just 14 km apart, but they serve different purposes for a private day trip.

Asni is the gateway: a working market town with a well-known Saturday souk, the first proper stop where the plain gives way to the mountains. It’s busier, more commercial, and a natural first stop if you’re continuing further into the Atlas.

Ouirgane is the quieter continuation: fewer crowds, a dam lake instead of a marketplace, and a slower, more rural feel. Its own market runs on Thursdays, a day earlier and with a very different atmosphere than Asni’s Saturday souk.

Many of our travelers pair the two: a stop at Asni for the market energy, then on to Ouirgane for the lake and the quiet.

Top Things to Do in Ouirgane

Walk the Dam Lake

The reservoir created by the Ouirgane dam is the valley's visual centerpiece, a small lake framed by red hills and, on clear days, the snow-capped ridgeline of Toubkal in the distance.

Hike into Toubkal National Park

Ouirgane is a recognized trailhead for day walks into Toubkal National Park, with routes ranging from gentle valley strolls to longer treks connecting toward the Amizmiz and Imlil areas.

Browse the Thursday Souk

The weekly market draws Berber families down from the surrounding hills, some still arriving by mule, for a trading day focused on local produce and household goods rather than tourist souvenirs.

Walk Through the Olive and Walnut Terraces

Footpaths link several small hamlets through terraced orchards of olive, walnut, and almond trees, a good option for a slower, low-effort walk between villages.

Visit the Tin Mal Mosque

A short drive further along the Tizi n'Test road leads to the 12th century Almohad mosque of Tin Mal, one of the few historic mosques in Morocco that non-Muslim visitors are permitted to enter.

Try Horseback Riding in the Valley

Several local operators offer horse rides through the valley and surrounding countryside, a different way to see the terraced hillsides and Berber hamlets than on foot

How to Get to Ouirgane from Marrakech

Best Route

Ouirgane is about 62 km south of Marrakech, roughly 1h20 by car, following the N7 road through Tahnaout and Asni before continuing toward the Tizi n’Test pass.

Self-Drive or Private Guide?

The road is paved and manageable for a rental car, but the appeal of Ouirgane is largely in the stops along the way, the dam viewpoint, village paths, orchard walks, that are easy to miss without local knowledge.

Our private guides in Marrakech build the drive itself into the experience rather than treating it as a transfer.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Ouirgane ?

Mar – May

Spring

The valley is at its greenest, with the terraces in full growth and comfortable temperatures for walking. This is generally considered the most rewarding season to visit.

Jun – Aug

Summer

Cooler than Marrakech thanks to the elevation, making the dam lake and shaded orchard paths a welcome escape from the city heat.

Sep–Nov

Autumn

Harvest season in the walnut and olive groves, with clear skies and mild temperatures well suited to hiking.

Dec–Feb

Winter

Quieter and cooler, with snow visible on the higher Toubkal ridgelines above the valley. A good season for dramatic mountain views, less so for lake swimming.

Where to Stay Near Ouirgane?

In Ouirgane

A handful of small guesthouses and ecolodges are scattered around the valley, several built into the hillsides overlooking the dam lake, ideal for travelers who want a night immersed in the mountains.

Further Into the Mountains

Continuing toward Asni or higher into the Toubkal foothills opens up more traditional Berber guesthouses, better suited to travelers combining Ouirgane with hiking or a multi-day mountain itinerary.

Marrakech

Most travelers still base themselves in Marrakech and visit Ouirgane as a private day trip, keeping access to the city’s hotels and restaurants while still reaching the valley in about 1h20.

What to Bring to Ouirgane

  • Comfortable walking shoes: paths through the orchards and around the dam lake are uneven and often dusty
  • A swimsuit: the dam lake is a popular, if unofficial, swimming spot in warmer months
  • Layers: temperatures drop noticeably once the sun sets, even in summer
  • Cash in dirhams: the Thursday souk and small village shops don’t take cards
  • A hat and sunscreen: there’s little shade around the lake and open valley sections
